Our oregano essential oil is steam distilled from the delicate green leaves of the purple flower of the herb Origanum vulgare. With its invigorating, herbaceous, pungent, sweet and tangy aroma, oregano essential oil is without a doubt one of nature’s powerhouses.

Oregano is a very close relative of marjoram, so much so that there is some confusion in the cross-pollination of their names: what is known as marjoram in Britain appears as oregano in Italy! This is the pungent aromatic herb of southern Italy, which is used, mainly in its dry form, to flavor pizzas and tomato sauces. In fact, Greek cooks are convinced that dried oregano, rigani, is best used dry and, furthermore, it is the only herb worth drying!

Oil of oregano contains two powerful compounds, carvacrol and thymol, both of which have been shown in studies to have strong antibacterial and antifungal properties. Carvacrol, a monoterpenic phenol, has widespread uses ranging from treating allergies and bacterial infections to protecting the skin. When used properly, oregano essential oil makes a great addition to any essential oil collection.
